NOVA Question

Hi all, I'm looking at buying a bike that was bought new in Italy in 1979 and was brought into the UK in 1997 and the current owner bought it in 1999. It has never been registered with DVLA and still has its Italian registration plate on it. The current owner has the original 1979 sales invoice but no import documentation or evidence of any taxes paid when brought into UK. Would I have a problem registering it on NOVA to get DVLA registration? Thanks, Charlie

So HMRC will just add it to NOVA without import paperwork and will not charge me any VAT?

Well, you're probably best asking them that . !!

But , from what you've written , you have the original purchase Invoice from Italy. So that should have a vat amount on it ?

HMRC rules. Require proof that vat was paid Within the EU.. Otherwise they are liable to charge vat. On your purchase value. But it seems in reality they are , at least currently , waiving this option. On cases similar. To your one . E.g. Historic purchases from within EU.. You are most likely to be issued with a NOVA number with nil tax due.

This may be a temporary thing , due to overload of applications , but. There you go.

The talking point on this , sis of course the genuine legitimacy of there actions. As its pretty obvious that any new bike sold within the EU in recent times has clearly had VAT paid on it !!!! I don't think they were considering all this knackered old stuff when introducing this rule ; it is aimed at expensive newer vehicles like big Mercs . It's an extension of what the HMRC Personel Transport section in Dover has been doing for years on more difficult to pin down vehicles. Like yachts and speedboats .?

Oh btw , re readings your original post and info therein ; Italy being within the EU. There is no import duty required on import. And back to the original sales invoice , it should have the vat value declared , and the Sellers vat number printed on invoice .

So I would reckon that you're covered !?!!
