I've subscribed to Classic Motorcycle Mechanics for the past few years, renewing last year at Stafford Show for what I thought was a yearly subscription. During this year I consider the magazine has gone down hill to the point where I didn't intend to renew the subscription.

You can imagine my surprise today when I checked my bank account and saw a direct debit for £37.00 to Mortons Media Group.

I've just spend a thoroughly unpleasant few moments speaking to a lady at Mortons who has told me that basically it was my responsibility to cancel the direct debit as it's an ongoing automatically renewing system.

The bottom line here - they've got my £37.00 and I cannot have it back.

I've told them not to send me any more magazines and I wonder how many of their subscription holders are aware of the agreement.

Oh well, lesson learnt.

It's the underhand way so many businesses operate now. Automatic renewal, fees for non-auto renew, admin fees, processing fees, booking fees, cancellation fees, waking up in the morning fees. Think of an activity and charge for it fees. Same with national and local government. You have to be on you toes to avoid 'em.

A while back I changed from a car to a van and my then insurer didn't cover vans. I asked them to cancel my policy and send me my proof of no-claims. "Yes sir, that'll be £37." WTF??? "Hang about but I've paid for my policy in full, it's run for 7 months, there's no refund due - all I want to do is remove the cover. I'M DOING YOU A FAVOUR BY NOT REMAINING ON COVER!!"
"It's still £37 to cancel."
"Okay F**k You. Just leave it running then and send me proof of no claims."
"Can't do that unless you cancel the policy sir."

It's the nearest I've come to torching my own car.

You are always responsible for cancelling direct debits. I do all mine online, but if not simply call at a branch and they will do it for you. Never assume otherwise.

Downhill ? Or just the same old bike articles on a repeat cycle ?

The problem with old bikes is they`ve stopped making them. So there is only so much you can write about the same make/model over and over. Hence it becomes very repetitive. Malcom has the same problem twofold trying to find things to put in the club mag . As its only about the one make and model range. And , of course, the same few people that do the same few things over, and over, and over again !!! exciting at first .................but after a while............. Can`t really be helped.
( Well, maybe with More KYLIE !!!! )

But as for modern business practices.....it`s the Goverment bodies I most object to screwing me. Look at the DVLA, already paid out of general taxation, yet ramping up the profits to them at every opportunity with increased service fees , their attempted monopoly on personal plates, this new electronic/cancelling-renwal of road tax etc etc etc.

to be honest, I enjoy motorcycle mechanics,classic bike and practical sportsbikes.can't see a problem.I only own jap bikes, but like reading about t'other stuff too 'cos were all different (wether it's brit/italian/german etc) I am not totally comfortable with "us" and "them" type clique stuff that seems to exist between classic bikes marques (and classic cars for that matter).... off the subject a bit I know!!....but heyho !!

What`s the point in that Gary he`s paid for it and agreed to pay for it for a further year and cannot get out of it, so read it or give it to somebody who will appreciate it. By the way automatic renewal is used by many others notably by insurance companies, I agree I think it`s a con but the shower of shit running the country are letting companies get away with these practices.

Gotta admit i cancelled my prescription of it earlier this year as it no longer appeals to me, but then again i have started to turn into Victor Meldew lately. (which i am actually quite proud of)

I just noticed one of my DD's is suddenly over 1,000 a month, there's no name on it!... luckily the bank rejected it twice, I 've cancelled it and we'll see who complains..

If you have a policy or a subscription, read the small print when you sign up, and cancel it when the initial purchase comes to end. That's preferably done in writing, or if done by phone confirmed in writing/by email. THEN, cancel any direct debit in relation to that product. There are no problems that way.

I did exactly that with my Classic Bike subscription and had no problems. The magazine is not at fault here, you are at fault for not reading the small print and for not telling them you wanted to cancel. Dont assume, make certain.

It's no different to chucking a credit card on a bar and saying "the beers are on me now". If you don't take the card back and tell the bartender when to stop - you are paying all night
