h2 smoking like a bar steward

Post by Keith500 »

well this has been going on a while, last year we took the old girl out for a blast, and the whole thing ended in disaster, you could not see the road behind, there was motorists flagging me down ,quite entertaining really lol,so after being relayed home took the gear box cover off and inspected the right hand crank seal and o,ring the o,ring was warped and not sealing and the right hand crank seal the lip had sunk inwards for about a third of its diameter,so confident that this was the issue, i replaced the seal,o-ring,and for good measure the collar on the crank, put it all back together and fired it up,after many attempts at getting the thing running due to shed loads of oil in the combustion chambers, the bike finally cleared and was ticking over with a nice blue haze :D ,so 4 weeks go by and i fired her up for the mot,and bugger me it,s smoking like a bastard again, after waiting 2 weeks for a oil check valve repair kit which i fitted, fired the bike up again, its better but not clear of dense white smoke when reved, the crank is 4 years old, everything new,on it balanced and fitted with aluminum, labyrinth seals on the center pot, help is appreciated,as this is now getting on my tits Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Keith you mention Aluminium Inner Labrinth Seals? I can only say that these are Trouble with a capital "T"!
Had an H1 Crank done a while back when these were the rage by Alan Brickyard & within 1500 Miles they had destroyed themselves making the Engine run like the Exxon Valdez - Much has been written about these Seals but all I would say is I will never ever use these things again - Am not the only one who has had trouble with these things either - Ask Roger Ramm!

in a nut shell they don't work on atriple they are ok for Yamaha twins but not on a triple I have a shelf full of ones ive taken out
people used them when rubber seals were not available a few years back I have even changed about 5 cranks that my late friend chris Ritchie built with his own lab seals and he was a precision engineer
I wont fit them they don't last

Just an afterthought
Have you took the exhausts off and cleaned them out?

No but the first time after changing the rhythm seals it cleared??? Blue smoke crisp??? That's why I changed the oil line non return valves? Bit of a bugger but it does tick over but it won't clear up?

They usually smoke out of one pipe only if the crank seal is shot clutch side. A good indicator is your gearbox oil level going down. You may have residual oil left in the pipe so might be worth taking pipe off and standing pipe up to let oil drain out. You might have used a new old stock seal that's gone hard or you might have damaged it when fitting . Lab seals are also probably shot.

all 3 smoking like a bar steward gear level has gone down alarmingly quickly, from top level to low level and that,s just firing her up, seals are new modern made in japan,so the strange fact it did clear, and left it standing for 3 weeks, and then its like the exxon valdise ,disaster ,i talked to Gary, and after our chat the crank is coming out, not happy any more with the lab seals, even if they were not the issue, which i think they are, they are on there way to a scrap yard lol

Hi Keith
I had a similar problem on a 72 H2 when using Silkolene fully synthetic 2 stroke oil. It was to thin for the pump and no matter how much I backed the pump off it kept smoking.
Changed to a cheaper oil and problem solved.
Also had problems with low mileage labyrinth seals on another bike.

had major issues with Silkolene 2 bstroke gumming up my engine, it didnt run hot enough for a full burn, cheaper ouls seem to work better....not to re-ignite the best 2 stroke debate.
I used to drink too much, I mean I still drink to much, but I used to as well.

Check the pump is not jammed open , lab seal have nothing to do with a smoke problem , if it smokes on the R/H cyl then it would be the outer crank seal , but this does no sound the case

Hi, it may have nothing to do with it but my H1 smoked loads and after a bit of trying different solutions I fitted a different oil pump, smokes just fine now so the problem was a worn oil pump.

I think everyone has missed the main point a few messages ago. The gear oil level is dropping. So could either be crank or engine casing seal. :smt102 :smt102

Probably not so much worn (after all it is lathered in lubricant) but in need of an overhaul. There are O rings in the ends that harden with age and not being used, that can rejuvinate the pump if replaced.

I have rebuilt 3 pumps this year ,
It's an age thing, the rubber components (O rings ) have a finite life and they have come to the end of their life

Yep but the centre and left have absolutely no access to gearbox oil..

As I said the right hand seals have been changed, both of them and the collar, and trust me all 3 smoke like a bar steward, the only way I think now is a full strip down

They can do if the cases are not sealed. Thumbs Up
