My H2

Post by scouse »

I've been asked quite a few times over the last 9 years where's your H2?
Well I've still got it,.
I went absolutely everywhere on it and it was my favourite bike to ride.
It all started to go wrong when the bike hydrolocked and bent a rod, to save having a the bike in pieces I sent a spare crank off to Gary to be rebuilt.
I stripped the engine rebuilt the bike and the carburation was miles out and it was a pig to ride.
I got in touch with Leo and he reckoned that one crank had better tolerances than the other, hence my settings being miles out
I then took it to Spa, on the way back I lost an end can.
I managed to gather what was left and bought some blank ally to repair it, various people said they could do what I wanted, but over 3 years waiting and nothing happened, I came across a set of dencos, so fitted them, again the bike just wasn't right.
I did notice that the tailpiece had cracked as had the frame mounts for it
So I bit the bullet and stripped it down completely.
COVID hit, but I found that my power coater was still open, so everything went to him.
So 4 years after COVID and I've started making progress.
There's going to be some not so pretty parts on her but I plan to get it ready for the German Triples Rally at the end of August

Sounds like there's a great bike in there just waiting to be found again.

I'll certainly be watching this space and it'd be ok by me if there was half hourly updates including detailed pics. 8)

So I'll throw in my dealings with my other bikes, I think this is going to be a long thread

A year is a long time Gary. I recall at the 2023 Peak Rally, you saying that you’d driven because you didn’t have a running triple ready to go.
Now, you’ve had the Peacock at the ‘24 Peak, and showing us good progress on the H2.
I’ll be looking out for the updates.
Well done mate! 👍🏼

Going home last night from work and the indicator on my 69 H1 stopped working,
this morning I replaced the bulb, but then I noticed that the earth from inside the pattern indicator had snapped off :-|
As I never throw anything out a quick rummage through my indicator box revealed a scrap rusty pattern indicator ( they don't last long if you ride in inclement weathers) lucky for me the earth ring and wire were intact. I'd ran out of time before work so dinner time I set about taking it apart. The screws are deffo past their best

A quick 10 minute job but I do need to find some new indicator screws

I had a very frustrating night in the shed last night,
In the end I gave up, does anyone have any hints or tips on how to get my seat latch back together? I do have the pin , but it's just not pictured

I dug my spare one out, but it didn't help

Ever since I've owned my H2 it's never had a headstock decal, I put this down to a previous owner welding plates on the frame, to replicate the 72 mods.
I think I'll be getting in touch with RB

The problem with having a few triples is, well just that, case your minds back to the last article I wrote for the club mag about my B, I stated that I binned it for a reason which was unknown to me.
Well around a month ago the bike was back together and I'd took it out for spin, on returning on full lock the brakes where binding. Was this slight binding enough to throw me down the road?
I was taking no chances and stripped the right hand caliper, it was a right mess, the piston was corroded the dust seals had disintegrated.
As I had a spare left hand caliper I left the original on the bike and stripped the spare one, this was also a mess.
So off to the powder coaters, new stainless steel pistons, seal etc etc..
Finally picked the last of my parts up on Saturday.
Life then got in the way and it wasn't until tonight at around 8 I found an hour to spend building my callipers
I managed to get one finished but for the life of me could I remember where I have put my caliper mounting bolts
I guess stainless steel ones from classic bike parts will be making there way to mine

Garage pixies have your bolts away. Anything unbolted is at risk. Little bastrids.

A while back I lost one of the right side bobbins from the Abba Skylift. It's not a tiny item, but it vanished without trace and I had to buy another. That's usually when stuff turns up,but not this time.

As I it's been a while since my last update so..
On my B I fitted my rebuilt calipers only to find that the brake lines fouled the forks
IMG_20240731_064737_1.jpg
Considering I've had these on the bike in the same position for over 20 years I was a bit confused
However this is how things go for me on a regular basis, I think I'm doing something positive and something will go wrong
I have a constant battle in my head with the devil on my shoulder saying " you know something not going to work out if you touch it" the angel sits there saying" go easy you've got this it's dead easy "
So instead of putting my B away in the garage for the night I left it on the patio overnight and to add insult to injury in the morning it had dumped a load of gearbox oil on the patio.
So I forgot about bikes for a while and just went out enjoying myself.
Anyhow this morning Saturday 3rd of August I woke up with a spring in my step at 4am ( after 6 hrs sleep) a quick cup of tea and into the shed, now I'd been using my 69 H1 to go to work and back, however the petrol smell when I go to get it out the shed in the morning was getting worse and I could see petrol stains around the float bowls, by around 10 o'clock I'd had the carbs off, fillled the float bowls to make sure they where flat, checked the float heights and got everything back together.
My attention then turned to my H2
I spent around an hour with my 240 v polishing mop cleaning my fork legs, a friend of mine has a 3 phase polisher which would have had the job done in 10 minutes, but I'd have felt a bit cheeky popping round asking can he open his workshop so I can use his ellecy to do my fork legs, boyed by the reasonable finish I achieved I went rummaging around in some boxes for the headlight brackets and all the rest of the paraphernalia that went with it, I was quite surprised to find everything and I've managed to wrestle everything into place.
This has given me a boost , but unfortunately I'm now at a gig in Sheffield, Liverpool v Manchester United is on at 0:45 Sunday and there's also a club night on after the gig we might hang around for so I think Sunday will be lost
It will be Tuesday before I get a chance to get in the shed again, I'll keep you all updated.
Did I test ride my 69, nah, the devil won again " don't do it, you'll know it will only leak again"
I'll leave that until Monday when I (try) to ride to work

Well the Devil was right
Went into the shed this morning and opened the door to a strong smell of petrol
I wheeled my 69 H1 outside and on the ramp is petrol from where I don't know
Once out into daylight the left-hand carb is covered in fuel.
The carbs were empty last night and I didn't turn the petrol on, I pull the pipe off the offending carb and it's empty, confused, yup, it's raining so I push it round to my garage 500 yards away and up hill.
I really don't know why I bother sometimes :(

Maybe a leaky hose to that carb,or a leaking fuel tap? The fuel stains appear to be on above the float bowl.

I put a simple on/off non vacuum tap on mine while the original went to Tango for a refurb, but the cheap tap works so well without leaks,I still haven't got around to putting the original back on.

I'm a great believer in not fixing what isn't broken. :D

Agree with Skub, stains are on top of the bowl, so you need to look elsewhere Gary Thumbs Up
